ZENTRALKAPELLE BERLIN &

WINDCRAFT BAND

in concerts

Zentralkapelle Berlin and the Windcraft Band have a long story of uniting different cultures through their music. They first came together for two performances in Cyprus in October 2015 and repeated the same show in July 2016 in Berlin.  For the third time, the two wind bands are ready to perform a diverse musical programme – from German Blasmusik, funky and pop pieces to some latin and traditional tunes – bringing people closer through the sound of their winds.

About the Zentralkapelle Berlin

In the beginning we were just friends – then we became an orchestra: Zentralkapelle Berlin is a concert band with a broad repertoire of music.

Since 2002 we follow the same procedure as every year: Throughout the year we enjoy playing at street festivals, private or public parties, art exhibitions or movie and theatre projects, and especially enjoy the sound of coins dropping into the strategically placed trumpet case. Once a year, all that practice, and quite a share of the coins from the trumpet case, culminate in the big formal “Traditional Summer Concert”, which we perform at luxurious concert halls like the Berlin Philharmonie, each year again winning the enthusiasm of the spoiled Berlin audience. At these concerts, up to 60 musicians with their woodwind, brass and percussion instruments fill the stage to its maximum capacity.

With our occasional tours to Sweden, Cyprus, Saxony, the Southwest of Germany, and Brandenburg over and over again, we contribute our share to international understanding. But wherever we play, one thing is guaranteed: at the very end, we will play the same piece. Every time.

About the Windcraft Band

Around twenty enthusiastic musicians from around the world met in 2013 in Nicosia and formed the Windcraft Band.  Since then, the band has performed in many big festivals, smaller venues and outdoor events all over Cyprus. This multicultural group celebrates their passion for music and fills up the city and village squares with their powerful brass sound. Funky and latin grooves make space to elegant swing pieces, rock sounds to traditional Greek and Balkan tunes, and everything blends to create a magical atmosphere, the way it always happens when people join their breaths and voices…

B-MOVIE: LUST & SOUND IN WEST BERLIN

Film screening

Tuesday 14th November 2017

In the framework of the Weeks of German Language, the Goethe-Institut Cyprus and Windcraft organise a screening of the film B-Movie: Lust & Sound in West Berlin 1979-1989 (Director: Jörg A. Hoppe, Heiko Lange, Klaus Maeck, Miriam Dehne, b/w and colour, 92 min., 2014/15)

The British musician, label owner and military fetishist Mark Reeder from Manchester had a fascination for electronic music (Tangerine Dream), which brought him to Berlin at the end of the 70s. Apparently – and luckily! – everything he experienced was filmed. Mark Reeder is the host and presenter of this journey back into dilapidated West Berlin at the end of the Cold War.

B-MOVIE: LUST & SOUND IN WEST-BERLIN (1979 – 1989) is not so much a documentary as it is a refined account compiled from documentary material, agreeably put together by Jörg A. Hoppe, Klaus Maeck and Heiko Lange and made into a new whole. A decade of West Berlin subculture in original footage, breathtakingly edited.

"...this place will never exist anymore. It has disappeared. With this film I am taking you with me on my very own journey through the eild West Berlin of the 80s".

The film is in German and English language, with English subtitles.

URIEL HERMAN solo in concert

jazz-rock influenced piano music from Israel

Thursday 4 December 2017

Uriel Herman (30), classically trained pianist and composer, operates on the seam between jazz and rock and his music is also influenced by classical music and Israeli sounds. Over the past two years, Uriel has been travelling around the world from Europe to Asia, preforming on major festivals and venues such as Festival jazz sous les pommiers (Coutances, FR), Duc de Lombards (Paris, FR), Festival Nuits du Sud (Vence, FR), Rabobank Amersfoort Jazz Festival (Amersfoort, Netherlands), Taichung Jazz Festival, Taichung Opera House (Taichung, Taiwan), The Forbidden City Concert Hall (Beijing), The Chengdu Concert Hall (China), Folkove prazdniny Festival (Namest, CZ), Jazzinec Festival (Trutnov, CZ), Jazzmeile Thüringen Festival (Weimar, Germany) Red Sea Jazz Festival (Eilat), International showcase festival IL, Tel Aviv Jazz Festival (Israel) and more.

In his Solo Piano, Uriel goes back to his roots, playing his original compositions and gives special interpretation to rock songs using classical elements and the freedom of Jazz.

“Classical music and classical playing are still very close to my heart, but what was missing was the freedom, the freedom to break free from the form…the freedom to improvise…to express…” During his visit to Costa Rica, Herman participated in a shaman ceremony that lasted all night long. It was in the wake of this experience that Uriel wrote “White night”, a kind of jazz rhapsody, a work based on classical form and elements, but with much room for freedom: “Those spaces that interest me on the stage are the musical domains where you have no idea what it will sound like. Music is the art of time…It takes place within time…It must change and be dynamic,” declares Herman.

Experience a live performance of “one of the brightest and most original pianists and composers of the younger generation” on 14th December 2017 at Windcraft.
