ZENTRALKAPELLE BERLIN

in Cyprus

1&3 October 2015

Berlin concert band to perform with the Windcraft Band in Nicosia and Limassol in early October

When Cyprus calls the Zentralkapelle is up for the challenge. At the invitation of the Windcraft Music Centre, the Berlin based orchestra with its 35 musicians will travel to the island for two concerts in early October.

The Zentralkapelle’s concerts will demonstrate that Europeans do indeed stand together. Both concerts will feature a lively entertaining programme of typically German Blasmusik tunes and pop songs paired with pieces played with the local Windcraft Band.

The concerts will both take place on special occasions: The first concert celebrates the Cypriot day of independence, while the second commemorates the German national day of reunification. This is as symbolic as it gets.

Trumpet player

Andreas Polyzogopoulos

in Cyprus this January for two concerts with the

Andreas Rodosthenous Trio

17&18 January 2016

Andreas Polyzogopoulos, one of the most eminent trumpet players in the Greek jazz music scene, collaborates for the first time with three excellent Cypriot jazz musicians of the new generation – Andreas Rodosthenous (bass), Giorgos Morfitis (piano) and Stelios Xydias (drums). In their two unique concerts in Limassol (17/1) and Nicosia (18/1), the four musicians will perform compositions of the bass player Andreas Rodosthenous, as well as original pieces from Andreas Polyzogopoulos’ personal albums. Their music is formed through the long performance experience and experimentation and the multiple influences of all four musicians.

The Andreas Rodosthenous Trio was formed three years ago by the bassist Andreas Rodosthenous, with Stelios Xydias on the drums and Giorgos Morfitis on the piano. The trio then collaborated with Iakovos Parpas on the Saxophone to present their first concert. Following that, they recorded the first personal works of Andreas titled “Simplicity” (2015) with Alkis Agathokleous on the Ney, who then continued performing with them. The band got invited to prestigious festivals like EUNIC jazz festival in Berlin and Technopolis jazz festival in Athens. The band is now in the process of recording their second cd.

Andreas Polyzogopoulos first got involved in music by studying guitar at the age of ten in Samiko, a small village in South-West Greece where he was born. At sixteen he moves to Athens and starts participating in rock and blues bands but soon he discovers jazz. He studies jazz guitar with Yiotis Samaras at Philipos Nakas Conservatory and in 2000 picks up the trumpet. In October 2002 he moves to the Netherlands and studies at the Conservatorium Van Amsterdam. He also takes lessons from Markus Stockhausen and Angelo Verploegen and follows a workshop with Paolo Fresu in Sardegna. While studying in Amsterdam he plays with various multi-ethnic groups and in 2006 he forms “Poly Quartet”, a group that performs his own compositions. In 2008, the band records the album “Perfumed Dreams” and wins the first place in “Motives for Jazz” competition in Belgium. The same year he graduates from Conservatorium van Amsterdam and returns to Greece. He appears on 45 records, has performed all over Greece and Europe and in 2010 was a member of the European Youth Jazz Orchestra. In 2013 he recorded a Cd with songs of his favourite rock band and all-time inspiration Pink Floyd (Heart of The Sun - The music of Pink Floyd) and toured around Europe and in New York city. Andreas colaborated with Tore Brunborg, Michel Portal, Gunter Baby Zomer, Markus Stockhausen, Tony Lakatos, Psarantonis, Savina Yannatou, Maria Farantouri, Dulce Pontes, Serge Teyssot Gay (Noir Desires), Anne Paceo, Kostas Theodorou, Yiorgos Kontrafouris, Mode Plagal, Nikos Sidirokastritis, Yiotis Kiourtsoglou, David Lynch, Stavros Lantsias, Haig Yazdjan, Vangelis Katsoulis, Takis Barberis, Thanasis Papakonstantinou among others. In 2014 Andreas brings a new band together playing his newest compositions. The record released in 2015 is called “Anicca” and the Mediterranean sound is more present in the sound of the band.

Communication within the musical group

A music workshop with saxophonist

DAVID LYNCH

Saturday 2 April 2016, 16:00-17:30

Windcraft Loud organises a music workshop with renowned saxophonist David Lynch, on the topic of communicating with each other within a musical group.

How does a musical group work effectively together? How do they rehearse, how do they achieve common trust and respect? Do they listen to each other when playing music, when talking about the music, when relating their vision about a composition to be worked on?

A group is a relationship as any other. It’s a partnership, an exchange of energy, an interaction of inner expression, of emotion, of ideas, of the subconscious. It involves being present, having our «feelers» be sensitized.

Our intention need be that of awareness of those around us and our relationship to them. Every note we play is in direct conjunction to what everyone else is playing.

David Lynch has the pleasure to welcome musicians of all styles to take part in a musical exchange.

Saxophonist David Lynch is one of the most prominent musicians of the contemporary music scene of Greece. Born in Los Angeles, California, he studied jazz with James Moody, Charles Lloyd, Ralph Bowen and Garvin Buschell. Since 1982 he lives and works in Greece, where was the founder or co-founder of groups such as Human Touch (with Stavros Lantsias and Yiotis Kiourtsoglou), Iskra, Special Request, Duo Faros (with Giorgos Kaloudis), The Missing Lynch, The Heavy Metal Band, among others. Among the artists he has performed with are Arturo Sandoval, Trilok Gurtu, Arild Anderson, Milcho Leviev, The Temptations, Barry White, Galaxy 2 Galaxy, Joe Higgs, as well as Haig Yazdjian, Eleni Karaindrou, Elli Paspala, Alkinoos Ioannides, Thanos Mikroutsikos, Giorgos Ntalaras, Pavlos Sidiropoulos, Kyriakos Sfetsas and others. As a solo artist, David has released three albums: Lit’l Song, Wandering Home (live recording at the Athens Music Hall) and Mousiki me thea.

[On 4th April 2016 David Lynch will perform at the Rialto Theater in Limassol, during the presentation of the new album by the Takoushis-Karapatakis Project "Colours of Another Sky", together with Marios Takoushis (piano), Gabriel Karapatakis (bass), Zacharias Spyridakis (cretan lyra) and Stelios Xydias (drums). The Well Tempered Sruti Box

Performance and Workshop with saxophonist

Hayden Chisholm

20/21 May 2016

Saxophonist and composer Hayden Chisholm presents on Friday 20th May at Windcraft his solo performance The Well Tempered Sruti Box and on Saturday 21st May he offers a three-hour music workshop where he will share his personal theories and playing techniques.

The performance

The Well-Tempered Sruti Box is a series of songs for saxophone and sruti box developed by Hayden Chisholm. The two instruments together give a unique sound that is truly hypnotic. Using overtones and just improvisation, the music slowly moves through all of the keys and begins to very slowly move the listener to other states of awareness. This music has been released twice on Hayden's two 13CD sets "13 Views of the Heart's Cargo" and "Cusp of Oblivion".

The workshop

Hayden Chisholm has been giving masterclasses worldwide for over 20 years and is recognised not only as a leading saxophonist but also as an experienced teacher dedicated to the art. Although he specializes in intonation and sound production his workshops cover a wide range of topics from ear training, improvisation, overtones, body work, breath, song learning, and general musicianship. His long running masterclass in Greece "The G-sting of Pythagoras" applies ancient music theory for the modern saxophonist. Although he regularly teaches and universities and conservatories he has a passion for early music education and always opens up his courses for players of all levels and other wind instruments.

Hayden Chisholm

Hayden Chisholm is a New Zealand saxophonist and composer. After studying in Cologne with a DAAD scholarship he continued his music studies in Japan in India. In 1995 he developed a new microtonal system he termed "split scales" for saxophone which he revealed on his debut solo CD "Circe". Since then his compositions have been recorded by BBC and WDR radios and he has toured and recorded extensively  worldwide. He has created music for several Rebecca Horn installations as well as composing scores for her films. In 2008 he was assistant director in the Salzburger Festspiele.  He has taught at Universities throughout the world and gives yearly master classes in Greece. He curates the annual Plushmusic festival in Cologne and Bremen. In 2013 he released the 13 Box Set "13 Views of the Heart's Cargo" and received the German SWR Jazz Prize. In 2015 he was "Improvisor in Residence" in Moers and opened the Moers Jazz Festival. In 2016 he released his second 13CD box "Cusp of Oblivion" on the Moontower Foundation Edition and directed his first short film "Sisyphus Runs".
