ARCHIVE 2013-14

1st Windcraft Music Fest
22-23 August 2014
Katydata, Solea

Two summer nights filled with sounds, words and voices…will bring back together locals and “foreigners” in the inn yard that once used to be a lively meeting place for travellers.

Windcraft Music Centre is moving to Katydata, a picturesque village in the valley of Solea, to organise its first music festival, inviting local bands that step on different musical traditions to create new and original sounds: TRI-COOL-ORE are “flirting” with jazz and traditional musical shades, the Ioannis Vafeas Project carries some great jazz musicians into jazz experimentations, The Amalgamation Trio rearranges Balkan and Mediterranean songs mixing them with jazz, improvisation and electronic music, the project Acapella Solo Loop uses voices, sounds and loops to tell “weird stories”, Rumba Attack draw inspiration from Spanish flamenco to compose their own rumbas, while Duo Lelale sings for us songs of the Mediterranean and Asia Minor in their own distinct voices.

Children and grown-ups will have the chance to participate in free music workshops and meet traditional musicians and singers, while walks in the village will reveal to everyone the hidden stories of the place and its people.

Traditional treats and food will be available during the festival and visitors will be able to use a camping site free of charge.

Combining its educational activities with the need to promote the original local music production, Windcraft Music Centre organises the specific festival, in an effort to bring closer the local art scene with the traditional environment of the countryside and to create a common space for cultural interaction.

* The festival’s detailed programme will be announced soon.

The festival is organised with the support of the Katydata Community Council.

GILAD ATZMON IN CYPRUS

The great jazz saxophone player Gilad Atzmon arrives from the UK to perform with his Jazz Trio at Windcraft Music Centre in Nicosia (6 Feb) and at Jazzy B in Limassol (7 & 8 Feb).

Gilad Atzmon is an Israeli-born British jazz musician, a novelist and an anti-Zionism activist. As a multi-instrumentalist he plays saxophones, clarinet and ethnic woodwind instruments. His album Exile was the BBC jazz album of the year in 2003. He has been described by John Lewis on the Guardian as the “hardest-gigging man in British jazz". Atzmon is touring extensively around the world playing in festivals, concert halls and clubs. His albums, of which he has recorded twelve to date, often explore political themes and the music of the Middle East.

Also, being a prolific writer, Atzmon's essays are widely published. His novels 'Guide to the perplexed' and 'My One And Only Love' have been translated into 24 languages. Gilad's latest book, The Wandering Who? is a study of Jewish Ιdentity Politics.  It was published in English in October 2011 and since then it was translated into ten languages.

Over the years Gilad Atzmon's music has moved more and more towards a cultural hybrid. As a bandleader and reed player he has been amazing his listeners with his powerful personal style that combines great bebop artistry and Middle-Eastern roots in a sophisticated, sometimes ironical manner. Influenced by Coltrane’s powerful approach on the sax, Gilad's live performances are simply breathtaking and overwhelming.

Gilad's work is highly praised by music press. Here are just a few quotes:

"Atzmon's fluid lyricism is in full flow on songbook classics and worldly originals. But as sweet romance morphs to modernist uncertainty, the bittersweet balance and rich emotional palette equally impress." Financial Times ***** March 2009

“A formidable improvisational array...a jazz giant steadily drawing himself up to his full height…” The Guardian.

“The best musician living in the world today” Robert Wyatt

"Gilad Atzmon, the expat Israeli saxophonist/clarinetist, combines thrilling jazz musicianship with a maverick political intelligence" Guardian ****

"Atzmon always manages to tell a story" Uncut **** March 2009

For his performances in Cyprus he will collaborate with the jazz musicians Ireneaos Koullouras on the double bass and Stelios Xydias on the drums.

The Amalgamation Project - Press Quotes

* “An instrumental voice(…) her latest project called the Amalgamation project is an exciting mix of sounds and styles fearlessly and effortlessly blended with Anastasiou ‘s unique voice providing the perfect glue to bring it all together”.

Cyprus weekly magazine

* “Vicky’s style is original. Her music is a fusion of greek music and jazz”.

Bonus magazine

* “Let me tell you (…)it was overall one of the highest quality performances of its kind I have ever seen. Full of surprises, twists and musical innovation. The group, the chorus, the technology involved, the variety of selection of the songs, the accuracy on performance, the expressions, the musicians. I wish we had more of this(...) This is the sort of performance that you pay £30-£40 to go and watch in Barbican. Well done for everyone involved!“

The London Greek language Meetup group

* “What an amazing performance!!!! Passionate, Creative, Emotional, Mystical!”

The London Greek language Meetup group

* “(…)The studio may have been small, but the sound Vicky, Ermis and Stelios produced was seriously mind blowing! The live songs performed were a blend of traditional music from the Mediterranean Sea and Balkan Peninsula complimented with jazz harmonies and grooves: in short an amalgam – a modern concept of traditional music. One of those songs was a delicate but profound interpretation of Misirlou. Vicky’s vocals were sensational, Ermis and Stelios on guitar and Cretan lyra respectively were hypnotising. As a team they interacted with instinct and feeling.I hope to have them back on the show in the future to perform live again!”
